J&J Philippines marks 65th year in PH with nationwide care initiatives

Raghu Krishnan, managing director of Johnson & Johnson (Philippines), Inc. leads the company’s nationwide care initiatives in celebration of its 65th anniversary with the donation of essential healthcare products to Save The Children Philippines, represented by its Sr. Manager for Corporate Partnerships, Riel Andaluz in this photo. Save The Children is one of the many organizations the company will be partnering with to distribute health kits to 65 communities across the country.

Sixty-five years, 65 communities, and one goal—to make healthcare available to all.

To celebrate its milestone anniversary, Johnson & Johnson (Philippines), Inc. (JJPI) is extending its signature brand of care to 65 communities nationwide through the donation of health kits in keeping with the strong “Culture of Care” that runs throughout the organization.   Distribution of the healthcare products is currently ongoing to communities in Caloocan, Rizal, Batangas, Zambales, Iloilo, and Leyte through partners ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation, Inc., World Vision Foundation Philippines, Americares Philippines, and Save the Children Philippines. In addition, hygiene kits for COVID-19 patients in Metro Manila were distributed earlier this year in partnership with Operation Compassion Philippines.

Johnson & Johnson upholds that good health is the foundation of vibrant lives, thriving communities and forward progress, and is committed to use its reach and size for good: to improve access and affordability, create healthier communities, and put a healthy mind, body, and environment within reach of everyone, everywhere. Wherever they are in the world, the Company’s 130,000 global employees work to keep people well at every age and every stage of life. This concern for the health of its stakeholders is articulated in the Johnson & Johnson Credo and is brought to life by the organization for its employees, its network of partners, beneficiaries, and, most especially, its consumers.

“Every innovation, product, and breakthrough for the benefit of public health and well-being is possible because of our two most important assets, our values and our people,” said the managing director of Johnson & Johnson (Philippines), Inc., Raghu Krishnan. “Because of our people, we are able to grow the positive impact that we have on the health and wellness of our communities each year.”

“By reaching out to these communities, we also continue to strengthen employee engagement, which is an important focus for us as they are the driving force behind Johnson & Johnson’s sustained growth,” adds Sean Zantua, Human Resources Director of Johnson & Johnson (Philippines), Inc.

As a total healthcare company, Johnson & Johnson has continuously introduced new products and innovations for every need state. From iconic consumer brands to scientific breakthroughs in the field of medicine, Johnson & Johnson has helped people from all around the world to live healthier lives every day from their very first day.

This focus on making healthcare available to all is brought to life through Johnson & Johnson’s portfolio of consumer health products, medical equipment, pharmaceutical products, along with its numerous partnerships and advocacies. Amid this pandemic, arguably Johnson & Johnson’s most important initiative is the mobilization of its resources—a $1-billion investment—to quickly develop a COVID-19 vaccine which is now being used all over the world.

“We believe it is our responsibility to improve the communities where we live and work, as we ‘blend heart, science and ingenuity to help change the trajectory of health for humanity’. As we renew this responsibility on our 65th year in the Philippines, we will push for more initiatives for our consumers, partners, employees, and communities that provide them with the care they deserve,” ended Krishnan.

Summit SuperSHEroes Come in Pink! 100+ Leaders of Breast Cancer Patient Groups Band Together

Last September 11, 2021, Olympic Gold Medalist Hidilyn Diaz surprised a group of Breast Cancer patient advocate leaders on the last day of the 2-day Patient Power Summit led and organized by the ICanServe Foundation Inc.

Olympic Gold Medalist Hidilyn Diaz with ICanServe Foundation Spokesperson Bibeth Orteza

A SuperSHEro herself, Diaz related her humble beginnings,  how she hurdled the  battles that got in the way of her dreams with the grace and determination of a champion’s heart.  Diaz emphasized, “Hindi ako sumuko. (I didn’t give up).” She said, the formula was simple “level up your game to reach your goal.” As a sports icon and an authentic leader in her field, she said  the goal should always be to become a  survivor and a victor.

In a gathering of cancer advocate leaders that represented 34 breast cancer patient groups from all over the country, the mission was beyond helping navigate a patient through wellness. “We continue to believe that early detection saves lives and we need to continue to make strides. But we also see the need to reach out and help each other, to share cancer resources, to work together to make an even bigger difference, to possibly come up with sustainable solutions for the breast cancer community,” Crisann Celdran, co-founder and Chairman of the ICanServe Foundation. She opened the summit with a call to the forerunners of the community to work closely together, elevate the advocacy and work towards speaking as one.

Crisann Celdran, co-founder and chairman of ICanServe Foundation

Kara Magsanoc-Alikpala, founding Chairman of the ICANSERVE Foundation, pointed out this is a unique time in the health space where one witnesses the most number of  founders of cancer patient groups carving a new path. “It’s a historical moment in the cancer space, as we witness the evolution of a new frontier we call the patient movement. We’re all founders, pioneers, and first or second generation volunteers. We have to be navigators for each other, as we shape a future, free of cancer,” Alikpala said.

Cancer patient leaders in attendance belonged to organizations that were independently created, hospital based, or founded with the help of a cancer doctor or a socio civic group. Yet they all  shared the same concerns from psycho social, the drastic interruption in family life,  to financial, to lack of access to quality care and affordable or free cancer diagnostics, treatments, palliative and survivorship care. ICANSERVE President Nikoy de Guzman also observed they shared the same burning desire to serve, “walang survivor na hindi lumaban.”

The patient leaders vowed they will not rest nor be complacent till breast cancer is diagnosed in its early stage cancer when it’s most curable, till every patient with cancer, no matter the stage, age, income bracket, religion, ethnicity, are given quality care and a chance to be with family for longer. Till seeing the end to breast cancer.

The Patient Power Summit was made possible and successful through the help of partner brands and organizations such as Bio-ONCO, AIA Summit, In the Pink, Pfizer Philippines Foundation, Nestle, Mondelez Philippines and Skincare for Hope.

SANOFI JOINS THE WORLD IN CELEBRATING WORLD HEART DAY BY ADDRESSING THE CHALLENGES OF THE TIMES

• CELEBRATES WORLD HEART DAY BY HIGHLIGHTING THE EMPOWER PROGRAM FOR HYPERTENSION

September 29 is World Heart Day all around the globe.

More than just a celebration, World Heart Day was established in the hopes that it could reach more people and be able to spread awareness about the perils of heart diseases and stroke.

Sanofi recognizes that this is a unique time to be worried about heart health and learn more about the steps that should be taken to ensure risk-free living, especially under a cloud of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It’s heartbreaking to see those with comorbidities battle a critical to severe form of the virus- forcing them to put their lives on hold, be isolated from family, friends and people who matters most to them,” Amal Makhloufi Benchouk, the Philippines Country Lead for Sanofi, shared in her opening remarks.

Statistics have shown that 7 out of 10 people are diagnosed with hypertension, and 2 out of 10 hypertension patients die. Sanofi continues to respond to the challenge of dealing with comorbidities during this time, by emphasizing the need to address the lack of awareness and limited access to cardiovascular disease management.

“Cardiovascular Disease remains the number 1 killer in the world, resulting in about 18.6 Million deaths worldwide and over 520 million people globally living with cardiovascular disease that has been disproportionately affected by the pandemic,” she remarked.

Sanofi’s mission has led them to create the Empower Hypertension Program, which aims to deliver awareness, prevention, and management to patients. The program provides enlisted patients with free coaching sessions led by nurse educators to arm them with information that tackles myths and facts about the disease, among others.

Sanofi has also partnered with Omron, a leading medical electronics company, to extend a 20% to 25% discount to patients, encouraging them to procure the technology in order to monitor their blood pressure regularly.

Sanofi remains committed to its mission to promote hypertension management at the early stages and to inspire individuals to take control of their own health.

BDO Remit donates Hygiene Kits to POEA Community Pantry

AS COVID-19 continues to adversely impact the lives of millions of Filipinos here and abroad, the efforts to at least mitigate its effects continue.

In celebration of Migrant Worker’s Day, BDO Unibank, through its remittance service brand BDO Remit, recently donated hygiene kits to the community pantry set up by Philippine Overseas Employment Administration’s (POEA).

For love of Overseas Filipinos. BDO Remit donates hygiene kits to the community pantry set up by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration in celebration of the Migrant Worker’s Day.

The kits, consisting of alcohol and face masks, among others, will benefit some 500 people and serve as a valuable health precautionary tool as POEA distributes them to overseas Filipinos coming back home from abroad, especially for those who will travel to areas in the country with still high COVID cases.

Setting up a community pantry is POEA’s own way of celebrating Migrant Worker’s Day this year as the agency was not able to hold its usual program of providing entertainment and giveaways to their clients, which POEA has been doing since 2017 in collaboration with BDO, because of health protocols.

In lieu of its usual activities, POEA decided to organize a simple community pantry this year to uplift the spirit of OFs and give them something they can use to protect themselves from the virus.

This is not the first time BDO Remit distributed health kits to OFs amid the pandemic.

Last year, in coordination with BDO Foundation, BDO Remit turned over hundreds of bags of hygiene kits to the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 and the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange, which were then distributed to OFs who were sent back to the Philippines due to the outbreak of the global COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition, BDO Remit’s pre-departure orientation seminar team provided hygiene kits to more than a hundred repatriated seafarers in Iloilo in cooperation with OWWA Region 6 office. In Likewise, while working with OWWA, the Philippine Overseas Labor & Office, and the Philippine General Consulate office, the BDO Remit office distributed face masks to stranded and repatriated overseas Filipinos at the Macau International Airport.

All these form part of BDO Remit’s “Kayang-Kaya, Kabayan” campaign, an embodiment of its commitment to empower overseas Filipinos and make them feel that the Bank is ready to support and assist them wherever they may be. For more information on BDO Remit, visit BDO Kabayan Facebook page—BDO Unibank’s dedicated page for the overseas Filipino market.

The HEART of the Family: Taking Responsibility For Your Own Heart Health and Spreading Awareness, Love & Support to the Family

The pandemic has impacted us in unexpected ways. It’s effect is far-reaching, not only because of the virus itself but also due to the questions it raises on our overall health and well-being. Among these are vulnerable patients, such as those with hypertension and other chronic conditions. That is why a holistic and proactive approach to managing our health is vital.

Last September 29, the World Heart Day was celebrated to raise awareness on our cardiovascular health and the chronic conditions that can have serious consequences on our health.

As part of its thrust to build a Healthier Philippines under its Panata ng Pamilya campaign and to help shine the spotlight on these serious health concerns that continue to affect Filipino families even amidst the pandemic, Sanofi Philippines, in partnership with BayanihanMD hosted a special World Heart Day session entitled Happy Heart, Happy Home.

Among the issues tackled by the webinar is the impact of hypertension among its patients and the important role of the family in managing this chronic disease.

“It boils down to lifestyle and that starts at home and what we’ve been exposed to when we were growing up. So if you grow up with unhealthy eating habits, you will really increase the risk of developing hypertension,” said Bayanihan host, Dr. Celine Fider.

Moreover, guest speaker and cardiologist, Dr. Anna Adora further stresses that while family history may play a role in developing hypertension, it is, first and foremost, a lifestyle disease.

“We run the risk of developing it from the choices we make. So it’s not hypertension that’s inherited but the unhealthy habits and lifestyle we pick up from our environment, our family,” she explained.

“That’s why the family is so important in managing these chronic diseases. If you have someone in your immediate family and household with hypertension, you and your other family members may also be at risk of developing it. So lifestyle modification must not just come from an individual level, but also for the entire family,” she adds.

Speaking on the partnership between Sanofi Philippines and Bayanihan MD, President and Co-Host Dr. Karl Ablola describes the two organizations’ mutually aligned advocacies.

“One of our objectives in this pandemic is to ensure healthcare access for all patients and that’s why we partnered with Sanofi Philippines,” he intimated. “Through WeHealth, Sanofi partners up with different platforms to bring healthcare to all; which is the same mission that we, at Bayanihan MD, have.”
