SIX STEPS TO PROTECT CLIENTS FROM DEBIT/CREDIT CARD SCAMS

SCAMS are becoming increasingly “authentic” and “sophisticated”. But there are ways to spot and outsmart them.

BDO Unibank enumerates six useful tips to keep the clients safe when making transactions using their debit and credit cards:

  1. Never share your One-Time PIN (OTP), card/account/reference number, or three-digit CVV with anyone, even if the person calling tells you he or she is from the bank. Real bank representatives will never ask for any of these confidential information.
  2. Do not verify your account by clicking on a link sent via email or SMS. These links will redirect you to a website that imitates the bank’s official website. These fake websites are used to steal your information.
BDO, for its part, will only send links to share information such as card promotions. When clients encounter suspicious emails, BDO’s advice is to send them to ReportPhish@bdo.com.ph.
  3. Only transact using BDO Digital Banking app or BDO Pay. If a client uses the web browser, just type online.bdo.com.ph on the address bar to access the BDO Digital Banking account. Remember that BDO will never ask clients to log in to their Digital Banking account through a link.
  4. If BDO monitors a suspicious transaction, the bank sends a transaction alert notification to its cardholder’s registered mobile number. Using its legitimate sender ID — BDO-Alert, the bank will provide the amount charged to the cardholder’s debit or credit card, and the merchant where the item was purchased. The cardholder will then be asked to verify the transaction via SMS.
If the cardholder did not make the transaction, they are advised to call BDO Customer Contact Center Hotline at (02) 8631-8000 or message BDO Customer Care with a blue verified checkmark on Facebook Messenger.
  5. Before traveling abroad, BDO reminds clients to check their available credit card limit and inform the bank how long they will be away prior to their trip. Doing so will allow the bank to take note of their overseas transactions. However, for added protection, the bank may still send SMS alerts or make calls to verify purchases.
  6. Cardholders have the option to lock and unlock their debit and credit cards using BDO Digital Banking to manage their transactions. This function comes in handy if they misplace their cards. When suspicious transactions are detected however, the bank will temporarily lock a client’s card.

To reactivate a locked card, clients may use either of these options: via BDO’s official website (click on “Cards,” “Credit Cards,” “Card Services,” then “Activation”) or through BDO Digital Banking mobile app (click on “More,” “Security Management,” then slide toggle button on card to be unlocked; wait for OTP and enter it to confirm). Cardholders can also text UB YES to 225678 or call the hotline at (02) 8702 6888.

BDO continues to advise its cardholders to always be vigilant and protect their sensitive information to avoid falling victim to fraudulent acts.

BDO WINS ASSET MANAGEMENT COMPANY OF THE YEAR AWARD

THE Trust and Investments Group (TIG) of BDO Unibank was named the Asset Management Company of the Year in the Philippines for the fourth straight year (2018-2021) by The Asset, at the recently held “Triple A Sustainable Investing Awards for Institutional Investor, ETF, and Asset Servicing Providers 2021”.

“Industry players accelerated the adoption of technology and relied on agility, risk management and engagement with investors to pull through such a tough year. For some of the most outstanding asset managers in Asia, ensuring effective communication is crucial even when a lot of the daily work has been moved online and to a work-from-home environment,” The Asset said in a statement.

It added, “This requires them to move fast in enhancing their digitalization capabilities and engaging with partners, especially investors, amid the market slump. The Asset was glad to know that many asset managers managed to convey the right information in a timely manner to their investors, thereby preventing sell-offs in the market.”

BDO TIG, which also won the award back in 2016, said the recognition is a testament to its commitment to service the clients even during the health crisis.

“Our ability to adapt to the ever-changing environment through the use of new channels and the creation of new processes for the new normal allowed us to service our clients despite the limited mobility due to the pandemic. The most important matter on hand was to keep BDO TIG visible to assure our clients that we are in full control of their investments,” said BDO TIG SVP and Head Rafael Ayuste Jr.

At the end of 2020, BDO’s consolidated trust assets under management (AUM) amounted to Php1.63 trillion, up 22% from the previous level of P1.34 trillion. Of this AUM, Php1.12 billion is managed by BDO TIG, while the remaining Php505 billion is managed by another BDO subsidiary, BDO Private Bank.

At the height of the pandemic, BDO TIG was able to quickly innovate and adapt to deal with the crisis and its adverse impacts through the implementation of new initiatives allowing for the:

• Efficient execution of daily operations while mindful of employees’ and clients’ safety and well-being

• Direct and targeted communication to clients informing them of market developments and allowing them to grab investment opportunities despite the volatile environment

• Continuous servicing of clients through the BDO Invest Hotline and BDO Invest Online channels, providing them a safe option to still do their investment transactions while most BDO branches were closed during the lockdown

May krisis man o wala, maiging mag-set tayo ng ating financial goals.

BDO wins first Gold, Silver, and Bronze Stevie Awards

BDO Unibank has received gold, silver, and bronze awards for its business innovation and effective communications in the 8th annual Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards.

The Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards are the only business awards program to recognize innovation in the workplace in all 29 nations of the Asia-Pacific region. Stevie Awards are widely considered to be the world’s premier business awards.

BDO’s employee newsletter, The Wayfinder, was recognized with a Gold Award for Innovation in House Organizations and Publications under the Annual Report Awards & Other Publication Categories. Featuring true-to-life employee stories of struggle and success during the pandemic, it was lauded for being an effective instrument in forging and strengthening solidarity, empathy, and cooperation within the organization.

BDO also received two Silver Stevie Awards for:
The Most Valuable Corporate Response under the COVID-19 Response Categories for its ATM on Wheels initiative, which allowed cash accessibility amid community quarantine restrictions; and
Innovation in the Use of Celebrities or Public Figures under the Corporate Communications, Investor Relations, and Public Relations Categories for its partnership with emerging social media influencers, TikTokers, to support its new BDO Remit videos starring endorser Piolo Pascual.

Two Bronze Stevie Awards for:
Innovation in the Use of Video under Corporate Communications, Investor Relations, and Public Relations Categories for its anti-scam video, “Utakan Ang Scammer (Outsmart Scammers),” which equips clients with information to combat scam attacks; and
Innovation in Public Relations Videos under the Videos Categories for “Celebrating Everyday Heroes,” an inspirational video montage showing how Filipinos found ways to help each other cope through one of the world’s biggest health crises.

“The pandemic made communications more important than ever. We had to modify our communication approach to our public by using digital communications channels more frequently, while keeping in mind our primary objective—that is, to impart factual information to our readers,” said BDO SAVP and Corporate Communications Head Honey Reyes.

More than 900 nominations from organizations across the Asia-Pacific region were considered this year. Gold, Silver, and Bronze Stevie Award winners were determined by the average scores of more than 100 executives around the world acting as judges in March and April 2021.

Stevie Awards president Maggie Gallagher said: “Organizations that won this year have demonstrated that they have continued to innovate and succeed despite the COVID-19 pandemic, and we applaud them for their perseverance and creativity.”

Finding ways amid the pandemic. BDO Unibank was recognized for the first time in the 8th Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards, taking home gold, silver, and bronze awards for its business innovation and effective communications.

EXPATS SAY THANKS TO THEIR BANK HEROES

LIVES would be more stressful, difficult, inconvenient, and less secure if not for Filipino frontliners’ commitment to their duties as we all struggle with the pandemic. These include bank employees who help clients access cash for our basic needs.

From Korea with Love

Sangsik Shim of Daelim Philippines is happy that even during the strictest periods of the Enhanced Community Quarantine his bank, BDO, was able to fulfill his company’s needs.

Mr. Sangsik Shim of Daelim Philippines

Mr. Shim appreciates that his bank has a dedicated Korean Desk staffed by Filipinos who are knowledgeable about Korean culture and even speak the language. “BDO knows how Koreans handle businesses, and for that, we’re lucky. Since then, Daelim has had short-term loans with BDO to fund our business operations. It also has been very easy to get credit lines from them because they know and support our company’s plan,” said Mr. Shim.

“We always want our partners to respond quickly, so thankfully, that’s how BDO has been so far. My company and also my own experience with BDO strengthened my trust in the bank. They continue to prove that even in good times when our business needed funding, and the bad times when there are unexpected events, we can rely on them.”

Mr. Shim was impressed at how quickly BDO responded to his needs during the pandemic. When he received a call that his credit card was about to expire, ECQ was declared. He was expecting that it would take a long time to transact for a renewal due to the lockdown but BDO processed fast and had his new card delivered.

Human Solution

2020 was also a challenging year for Stefan Schmitz, CEO of Antrak Logistics. Fortunately, Mr. Schmitz’ line of business is considered an essential one: it was subject to lesser restrictions in terms of mobility. Nevertheless, with quarantine affecting services along the supply chain, there was still the risk of disruption in its operations.

Mr. Stefan Schmitz, CEO of Antrak Logistics

According to Mr. Schmitz, he is lucky to have a bank that makes sure transactions went as smoothly as possible. “I applaud BDO because they are always reachable for every transaction even with the lockdown restrictions. Also, we were able to push our clients to transact online so they can pay their employees even with the work-from-home set-up. Other than that, BDO assisted us in our business expansion through their loans even during the pandemic. We looked for efficiency, and we found it in BDO,” he said.

While many problems required a technological solution, Mr. Schmitz said that BDO provides the best solution of all: the human factor that assures him that everything will be all right.

“Nowadays, with so much reliance on technology, it’s very hard to keep the personal connection but BDO always has that human touch that I admire. I think BDO has done a great job there especially in my business because there is always somebody you can rely on. All I have to do is make a phone call and I am able to reach a person who can assist me. It enables us to make better decisions with less stress and difficulty.”

Keeping “Business as Usual”

As a global management consultancy, Roedl Philippines, Inc. is mainly concerned with helping international clients set up and run their businesses in the Philippines. It also extends the same service to Philippine companies based overseas, particularly in Germany. Roedl & Partner has 109 offices in 49 countries. With a tight-knit grid of intentional offices and global connected clients, the company needs to operate as efficiently and as effectively as possible locally and cross-boarder.

When the quarantine and lockdown were declared in Manila, Roedl Philippines needed a banking partner that could assist the company and its clients to complete particularly their international transactions—since despite the local lockdown and travel restrictions the global business never stopped.

“We have a set of requirements for any business partner we work with. First of all, we look for entrepreneurial spirit. This means seeing challenges as opportunities. It goes without saying that we expect from our staff and business partners to bring in an alert mind, commitment, and professionalism,” said Dr. Marian Norbert Majer, Executive Director and Consultant of Roedl Philippines, Inc.

“What is also of utmost importance to us, is business integrity. I would define integrity as the ability to gain trust and respect. Both trust and respect can only be gained through time, through consistent and reliable performance. I can attest that BDO fulfills all of these requirements. It was proven over a longer period of time but particularly during the pandemic.”

For those reasons, Roedl continues a strong business relationship with BDO all these years. According to Dr. Majer, BDO was able to consistently provide service and assistance throughout the ECQ period. “We highly appreciate that despite limitations due to the ECQ, we always had someone from BDO who was directly and constantly available to take care of our requirements. This means not only our requirements, but particularly the requirements of our clients.”

The pandemic underscored the importance of reliability and trust during times of crisis. For these expats, they chose BDO because the bank continues to find ways amid difficult challenges.
